NDE of Ceramic Composite Armor

Description:

Composite armor containing advanced ceramic material tiles is an important part of advanced armored vehicle design. Evisive Scan microwave interference scanning method can image this complex, structured material with access from one surface only, without contact, through contacting and no-contacting dielectric layers.  This is a desirable method for condition monitoring of ceramic armor at maintenance depots and in the field.

Summary:

Under US Army SBIR A082-186 Phase I and Phase II contracts, Evisive is developing prototype equipment for nondestructive testing of complex ceramic armor. The Evisive Scan method is well suited to the limited access inspection environment and detection of both cracked ceramic tile and delamination of armor structure sub-elements. The Evisive Scan testing system prototypes will be deployed for trial use in manufacturing and field maintenance environments as manufacturing Quality Control and for in-situ condition assessment.

Results:

Tests to date have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Detect, locate and size cracked ceramic tile
  • Detect and size laminar features
  • Differentiate ceramic armor tile of various compositions
  • Differentiate variations in material properties
  • Estimate depth of features
